HARTS, W.Va. — Robert Ray Adkins, 76, of Harts, departed this life Monday, May 13, 2013, at his residence.
Born August 7, 1936, in Mallory, he was a son of the late Okie and Della Belle Ferrell Adkins. Also preceding him in death were his paternal grandparents, Wilbur and Martha Adkins; maternal grandparents, Smith and Nettie Ferrell; four sisters, Arnette (Dale) Lehman, Lula Belle Adkins, Ruby (Jim) Wolfe and Terri Adkins; one brother, Jackie Lee Adkins, and one grandson, Andrew Thomas Peterson.
Robert enjoyed attending church at Toney Christian Fellowship, talking to his friends, playing with the grandchildren, and working in his garden.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Joan McGatha Adkins of Big Ugly; two daughters, Robin (Ernie) Manns of Harts, and Susan (Roger) Workman of Big Ugly; one son, David Wesley Adkins of Big Ugly; one sister, Cathy (Larry “Dink”) Allen of Yawkey; two brothers, Okie (June) Adkins Jr., and Jerry (Andalene) Adkins both of Big Ugly, six grandchildren, Jonathon (Sabrina) Peterson of Fort Gay, William Peterson of Big Ugly, Carrie Manns of Harts, Susan Ashley Workman of Toney Addition, Kayla (Eric) Adkins of Rt. 37, and Sandra (Frankie) Maynard and family of Crawley; one great grandchild, Carson Peterson of Fort Gay. A special remembrance for Laura Thompson and church friends, Danny Steward, Doug Allen, David Vance and Preston Shelton, and a very special remembrance for Donnie Wells and Frank Jarvis.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 17, at Toney Christian Fellowship Church with Pastor Donnie Wells officiating. Burial will follow at George Duty Cemetery at Broad Branch of Big Ugly.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday at the church.
Pallbearers are Rocky League, Ronnie League, Stoney League, Michael League, Terry League, Duke League, Jonathon Peterson, David Vance and Doug Allen, and honorary pallbearer will be William Peterson.
Freeman Funeral Home of Chapmanville is in charge of arrangements.
