Pikeville Medical Center becomes member of Mayo Clinic Care Network
PIKEVILLE, KY. — Health care in this area took a leap to the next level as Pikeville Medical Center (PMC) became the latest member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network.
PMC President and CEO Walter E. May announced the affiliation before a gathering of media, local officials and hospital employees.
As he made the historic announcement, May said, “As of today, we are a part of the Mayo Clinic Care Network. The Mayo Clinic Care Network is made up of a small, elite group of hospitals across the nation and around the world. Mayo discussed this with us for a long time. Becoming a member of the network was a process we had to go through. I really believe this relationship of collaboration will lead to world-class patient care here in Pikeville.”
May was quick to dispel rumors the hospital had been sold to the Mayo Clinic. Both organizations will function just as they have in the past, with the same management and staff.
“Their role will be one of collaboration, cooperation and consultation. Learning the Mayo Clinic’s processes and procedures will help us immensely to run a better hospital — and it will help our patients,” said May.
The Southeast Medical Director, Mayo Clinic Care Network Stepen Lange, M.D., took the podium, “With today’s announcement, we have 18 members across 10 states, the Carribean and Mexico.”
Lange thanked and commended Mr. May and his entire leadership team, especially Juanita Deskins, for their vision and commitment to making this relationship begin. He also thanked the physicians who were insrumental in moving the decision process along, including hosital Chief of Staff Dr.Naveed Ahmed, Dr. Bill Harris, Dr. Mark Swofford, Dr. Vickie Morgan and Dr. Duane Densler.
“I think it’s very important for me to state up front that Pikeville Medical Center, its physicians and all of its staff have already demonstrated they are the premier medical center in this region based on objective criteria that show they provide high-quality medical care consistently over time,” said Lange, “Our mission is to work collaboratively to improve the quality of health care and value for our patients. We are very excited to work together with Pikeville to find bold and innovative ways to enhance the quality of life for the patients.”
PMC physicians will be able to connect with Mayo Clinic specialists on questions of complex medical care using an electronic consulting technique call eConsults. PMC physicians also will have access to Mayo vetted medical information through the AskMayoExpert. These tools, in addition to health care consulting, will help the staff at PMC provide the best care for its patients as well as improve its systems and the health of the community.
Members of the network share a commitment to improve the quality and delivery of health care. The primary goal is to help people gain the benefits of Mayo Clinic knowledge and expertise close to hime, ensureing patients need to travel for care only when necessary.
The Mayo Clinic Care Network takes into account all areas of health care, including open heart surgery; therefore, the hospital will no longer be affiliated with the Cleveland Clinic.
