BIG UGLY, W.Va. — John Phillip Butler 77, of Big Ugly, departed this life Sunday, June 2, 2013, at his residence.
Born September 29, 1935, at Allen Junction, he was a son of the late John Phillip Butler and Alma Elizabeth Daniels. Also preceding him in death were his grandparents, Carrie Haslett and Elmer Elsworth Daniels, and one brother, Jerry Walker Butler.
John enjoyed hunting, fishing, wandering the mountains where he felt closest to his Savior Jesus Christ, building model airplanes and flying airplanes. John graduated from Man High School and got his degree in Criminal Justice at Seminole Junior College. He received many awards, commendations and achievements with the USAF in his 22 year career. John was a combat Vet in Vietnam, gunner on B-52 and a crew member of the B-52 crew that won worldwide bombing competition in 1961.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 57 years, Mary June Butler; one daughter, Theresa (Lee) Butler Bass of Houston, Texas; two sons, Johnny (Pat) Butler of Spring, Texas, and Scott (Judy) Butler of Big Ugly; two sisters, Carrie Billiams of Georgia and Wanda (David) Lee of Orlando, Fla.; three brothers, Roger, Forrest and Danny Butler, all of Florida; 13 grandchildren, Emily Hansen, Jacob Bass, Katelynn Bass, Maggie Klaus, Samuel Bass, Phillip, Lesley, Bonnie and Michael Butler, Nichelle, Heather, Breanna and Hayden Butler, and 10 great-grandchildren, Ellee and Olivia Hansen, Ainslee, Cameron, Zachery, Claire and Genevieve Bass, Chassidy Ozuna, Faith and Izaiah Butler.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 6, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at Pecks Mill with President Hank Stowers officiating. Burial will follow at VanNatter Ferrell Cemetery at Leet.
Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Johnny Butler, Scott Butler, Jacob Bass, Samuel Bass, Phillip Butler and Michael Butler.
Freeman Funeral Home of Chapmanville is in charge of arrangements.
