Local man arrested again

A local man on parole was arrested and jailed again recently on several charges.

Larry Rashawn Turner, 27, of Logan, was arrested in Logan by City Patrolmen Mark Dickerson and Aaron Newsome with an assist by several members of the Logan County Sheriff's Department on Sept. 10 and was charged with a parole violation, possession of a controlled substance, fleeing on foot and battery on an officer.

One of the officers involved in the arrest told The Logan Banner that Turner had an attachment out on him for parole violation when he was spotted near a tattoo shop in town and fled police.

Turner, the officer said, was believed to have had a pistol in his pocket when the chase began and, later, the officers obtained a metal detector from the Chapmanville Police Department to search for the weapon.

The metal detector did not work and officers tried to obtain one from Walmart. However, despite searching for some time, no gun was ever recovered.

According to police reports, the officers along with deputies Mike Sutherland, Terry Robinette, J. Sheppard and M. Carter, responded to the area of 411 Stratton Street in order to serve an arrest warrant on Turner for parole revocation.

The report said that, upon their arrival, Officer Dickerson observed Turner standing in front of the residence at 9:46 p.m., which is past his stated curfew imposed by the parole board.

Dickerson reportedly called to Turner and instructed him he was being placed under arrest for his violations. At that time, Turner began backing away and placed his right hand into his pants pocket, the report said.

Turner was reportedly instructed numerous times to remove his hands, but he allegedly refused to comply. Dickerson then attempted to place handcuffs on Turner, at which time Turner allegedly turned and fled east on Stratton Street towards Holland Lane, with officers giving chase.

During the chase, Turner reportedly kept his hand in his pants pocket and ignored commands to stop until he got to 517 Stratton Street near the railroad tracks.

"At that time, Turner removed his hand and threw an unknown object towards the railroad track area and hid on the back porch of said residence," the report states.

"This officer along with Deputy Sheppard located and removed Turner from the porch and ordered him to lay on the ground, which Turner refused to comply with. At that time, Deputy Carter came from behind and physically placed Turner on the ground."

When they attempted to handcuff him, Turner allegedly resisted "with violence, striking these officers with feet and hand strikes."

Finally a deputy pepper sprayed Turner and officers were able to handcuff him and take him into custody.

"Upon speaking with Turner, he stated he fled because he had consumed alcohol and was scared,” the report said. “Upon search incident to arrest, Officer Newsome located a rolled marijuana joint inside his cigarette pack which field tested positive for THC content. Also located was a cigarette wrapper with a white, powdery residue inside. Residue was unable to be tested due to (being of such a small) quantity."

Turner was booked at the Southwestern Regional Jail at Holden at 11:10 p.m.
