BUFFALO – For the second straight year, Logan County sent all three of its high schools to the state softball tournament.

Logan County was also well represented at Thursday’s North-South all-star tripleheader at Buffalo.

Man’s Marlena Frye, Logan’s Ali Neace and Chapmanville’s Bre Thomas all turned in strong performances for the South.

The North, however, won two of the three games to take the series.

Behind Frye’s two-hit shutout, the South won 7-0 over the North in Game 2. The North prevailed 2-0 in the third game and also won the opener 3-2.

Frye struck out 12 batters in the South’s win.

She redeemed herself after Man lost 8-7 to South Harrison in last month’s Class A state championship game at Vienna. The Lady Billies were looking for their third straight state crown.

Frye, who is headed to play at West Virginia State and was a first-team all-state pick, shared a five-inning no-hitter with Neace in the third game but the North won 2-0.

Frye capped off a brilliant high school career and put Man softball back on the map.

In her four years with the Lady Billies she sported a 106-10 record, struck out 1,256 batters and recorded 86 shutouts.

The North won the opener as it scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Chapmanville’s Thomas helped lead the Lady Tigers to their back-to-back Class AA state championship this year. She earned MVP honors for the South as she ripped a two-run homer to center in the top of the seventh inning in Thursday’s opener. The two-run shot gave the South a 2-1 lead.

St. Albans’ Samantha Snodgrass, the South’s starting pitcher, gave up one earned run on one hit in four innings with 10 strikeouts. She pitched the Red Dragons to a 1-0 win over Logan in this year’s Class AAA state championship game.

Ritchie County’s Brittnay Spencer was named the North’s MVP.

Frye was the South’s MVP in Game 2. She also singled in a run.

The North’s MVP was Morgantown’s Kiara Smith, who had the only two hits off Frye.

Scott’s Ciera Bias went 2-for-2 in the third game and was the South’s MVP.

In the skills competition, Player of the Year Snodgrass won the home run derby, hammering four round-trippers, and the overhand (67 mph) and underhand (60.8 mph) throwing contests. She is headed to play at Division I Youngstown State.

Frye won the accuracy throw.

The all-time series, which began in 1993, is now tied at 20 wins apiece.
