The terrible blunder of the Iraq war

All American combat troops will be withdrawn from Iraq by the end of August — ‘‘as promised and on schedule’’ — President Barack Obama told a Disabled American Veterans convention in Atlanta recently. Only an international force of advisers will stay behind to assist Iraq’s new government temporarily.

At last, the terrible blunder by the former George W. Bush administration is coming to an end. The pointless, needless, unnecessary war that cost nearly 5,000 young American lives will pass into history.

The U.S. invasion was based on bogus reasons. Starting in 2002, the Bush White House declared that Iraq possessed horror weapons, and was in league with fanatics who would unleash those weapons on Americans. The Bush team said Iraq’s people would greet U.S. troops as liberators, and Iraq’s own oil wealth would pay the cost of the American attack.

All those pretexts turned out to be untrue. The Iraq war was a colossal mistake. ...

After it became obvious that Bush’s reasons for the invasion were baseless, the White House shifted gears and said the purpose of the attack had been to remove a former dictator. ...

Looking back, the Iraq invasion was a historic U.S. bungle that wouldn’t have occurred under a wiser leader.

Callowaymine,

Thanks! You're right about Jack. He won't tell the truth because he is not interested in the truth. Reminds me of the old saying, "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink."

Regarding this "horse", it's been beat to death I think. Time to let this thread close out.

Great post BioHOG, but, Jack does not and will not tell the truth. He is Obama's #1 stooge in WV.

BHOG, I beleive that you put enough black on white to let other readers make up their own mind.

Still, Congress did not declair or authorize war against Iraq.

Congress reafirmed "The War Powers Act of 1973". Sec.3, (c), (1) & (2). This Act gives the standing President the power to defend the U.S. against a foreign attack without consulting Congress for 48 hours.

The military can stay abroad for 60 days, with another 30 days to retrive them.

Apples and Oranges, the popular vote will determine the electors. The Florida Legislature determined that the electors would be determined by popular vote. Like most States.

Three Fascist U.S.Supreme Court judges not only violated the rights of the people of Florida, but violated the rights of all U.S.Citizens.

14th admendment, equal protection under the Law.

For 4 years we had a Moron pretending to be the President of the United States.

The first day that Bush/Cheney took office is the day our Nation tanked.

Bush/Cheney is a disgrace to the Human Race. They should be turned over to the International War Crimes Tribunal at The Hague. There they should be tried for crimes against humanity. Then they should be treated to the same punishment that Sodam received from the puppet government and Kangaroo court that Bush/Cheney set up in Iraq.

From the "AUTHORIZATION FOR USE OF MILITARY FORCE AGAINST IRAQ RESOLUTION OF 2002" (link is here: http://www.c-span.org/resources/pdf/hjres114.pdf)

SEC. 2. SUPPORT FOR UNITED STATES DIPLOMATIC EFFORTS.

The Congress of the United States supports the efforts by the President to—

(1) strictly enforce through the United Nations Security Council all relevant Security Council resolutions regarding Iraq and encourages him in those efforts; and

(2) obtain prompt and decisive action by the Security Council to ensure that Iraq abandons its strategy of delay, evasion and noncompliance and promptly and strictly complies with all relevant Security Council resolutions regarding Iraq.

SEC. 3. AUTHORIZATION FOR USE OF UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES.

(a) AUTHORIZATION.—The President is authorized to use the Armed Forces of the United States as he determines to be necessary and appropriate in order to—

(1) defend the national security of the United States against the continuing threat posed by Iraq; and

(2) enforce all relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions regarding Iraq.

(b) PRESIDENTIAL DETERMINATION.—In connection with the exercise of the authority granted in subsection (a) to use force the President shall, prior to such exercise or as soon thereafter as may be feasible, but no later than 48 hours after exercising such authority, make available to the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President pro tempore of the Senate his determination that—

(1) reliance by the United States on further diplomatic or other peaceful means alone either (A) will not adequately protect the national security of the United States against the

continuing threat posed by Iraq or (B) is not likely to lead to enforcement of all relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions regarding Iraq; and

(2) acting pursuant to this joint resolution is consistent with the United States and other countries continuing to take the necessary actions against international terrorist and terrorist organizations, including those nations, organizations, or persons who planned, authorized, committed or aided the terrorist

attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001.

(c) WAR POWERS RESOLUTION REQUIREMENTS.—

(1) SPECIFIC STATUTORY AUTHORIZATION.—Consistent with section 8(a)(1) of the War Powers Resolution, the Congress declares that this section is intended to constitute specific statutory authorization within the meaning of section 5(b) of the War Powers Resolution.

(2) APPLICABILITY OF OTHER REQUIREMENTS.—Nothing in this joint resolution supersedes any requirement of the War Powers Resolution.

Sorry Jack, but once again, you're wrong and not telling the truth.

On to the election:

Again you are not telling the truth. It was the Florida Supreme Court who violated the 14th Amendment and Article 2 of the U.S. Constitution. Under the U.S. Constitution, only the Florida Legislature can determine how a states electors will be selected. The Florida Supreme Court overstepped it's authority. However, in the end, based on the independent recount done by the Associated Press of the votes Al Gore requested to be recounted, Bush would still have one. It's been 10 years Jack. Let it go. You were wrong then and still wrong now. The truth will set you free.

Now to the economy:

Looking back, the economy didn't tank until Obama and the Democrats took over Congress in 2006. By no means am I crazy about all of the spending Bills the Republicans pushed forward, but they're nothing compared to what the democrats have done especially since Obama has taken over as President. The deficit has increased three times under Obama than Bush. Again, tell the truth Jack. Set yourself free.

The resolution passed by Congress in 2002 was the Iraq Resolution.

It at no time declaired war on Iraq.

Bush/Cheney used the U.N. resolution 1441 to invade Iraq. The Iraq Resolution gave Bush/Cheney the same powers as the The War Powers Act of 1973.

If we are ATTACKED, the President may retailate with the Military Forces of the United States.

The lawful recount by the State of Florida was stopped by the unlawful act of three Fascist Sureme Court judges. These judges stoped the recount until the time limit expired.Period.

Bush/Cheney bankrupted our Nation by taking out of the Economy approx. 3 Trillion dollars.

Obama is trying to turn around this 3 Trillion deficit by puting Billions back into the economy. Our economy is based on a consumer driven economy.Period.

Yes, Bush/Cheney dug a Depression hole.

Jack,

With respect, you are being selective with what the "AUTHORIZATION FOR USE OF MILITARY FORCE AGAINST IRAQ RESOLUTION OF 2002" says. Read the resolution in full (I'm sure you have already, but do it again and be honest). You can do so here: http://www.c-span.org/resources/pdf/hjres114.pdf

Now, back to the Florida recount: You're changing your argument. The comment you put on the New York times doing a "statewide" recount is not what you discussed earlier. Gore requested a recount of only four counties. The courts only ruled on the recount on what Gore requested. The AP recount which showed Bush would have still won was based on the recount Gore requested.

Further, the statewide recount that the NY Times commented on suggests Gore "may" have won, not "would" have won. It was impossible to ascertain because the overvotes contained selections for two different candidates.

All evidence shows that based on the recount Gore "requested" he would still have lost, had the courts not stopped the recount.

On to the "economic recovery". President Obama himself said his and the democrats stimulus plan would prevent unemployment from going over 8%. President Obama and the democrats said they would only increase taxes on those earning over $250K, yet taxes are going up on all tax brackets. President Obama and the democrats criticized President Bush and the Republicans over the defict, yet President Obama and the democrats have increased the deficit faster and higher in two years than President Bush did in eight years.

You can say Bush/Cheney dug a hole, but Obama and the democrats have brought in a backhoe and have showed how to really dig a hole.

Bio, with respect.

Google: War Powers Resolution of 1973.

Google: UN Resolution 1441.

Google: The Iraq Resolution.

Read where it begins with, The resolution "supported" and "encouraged" diplomatic efforts by Bush.

Bush actually used UN Resolution 1441 to invade Iraq under the "Bush Doctrine".

Congress has not declared war on a foreign Country since 1941.

Google: Florida election recount.

"The New York Times did its own analysis." The Study showed that the results of "a statewide recount of all disputed ballots"...Gore would have won.

Google: Economic Recovery in the Great Depression.

This will show that in 1933 the U.S. hit it worst point and equal recovery did not happen until 1942.

Don,t expect recovery in President Obama's time.

Bush/Cheney and the Republician Party dug us a very deep hole.

Very ture, all things in the U.S. should be determined by the Constitution, but National election are determined my the States.

The U.S.Supreme Court delayed the State recount until the time limit expired, then turned the case back to the State saying that they did not have juridiction in the matter.

"If the recount had gone forward Judge Lewis might well have counted the overvotes in which case Gore might well have won."

Thank you, Rehnquist, Scalia and Thomas.

Jack,

As for the authorization to use force against Iraq, I suggest you read what was actually passed. You are being rather myopic in your representation of what was passed.

The 2000 election was decided by the people in accordance with the U.S. Constitution. The Associated Press (hardly a friend to Bush or Republicans) conducted a "recount after the elections and found Bush would have still won.

Democrats have controlled Congress and the purse for four years now. Nearly two of those years with a super-majority and a Democrat POTUS. Unemployment is through the roof, the debt has tripled with no end in sight. They're allowing taxes to go up on all brackets.

Liberal Democrats saving the country?? They're pushing it over the edge.

Coming from someone who has been to Iraq and has seen the benefits of us going in and putting a boot in Saddam's butt, the citizens of Iraq are far batter off for us having entered their country. People can say all they want but I guarantee you that the people of Iraq will look at President Bush as a hero for many years to come. I can assure you that the only people in Iraq that benefit from Saddam Hussein was the Hussein family. They kept their military well fed and in return the military kept the rest of the population under an iron fist that resulted in certain death for even thinking negative thoughts about Saddam. I am sure there will be some that will scream "Kim Jong Il" but as much as I really believe that we could sit back and watch South Korea wipe the floor with the North Koreans I believe that President Bush was smart enough to listen to his military leaders when they said that fighting a war on three fronts would definitely be too much.

AlGore is a dunce. When he is not groping women in hotels he is conning idiots who think they are destroying the world by driving an SUV. Proven executive...LOL!

As usual, Jack, your analysis is incredibly bad. Bush was not, nor is, a conservative. He was better classified as a moderate. No conservative would ever let Ted Kennedy write his education bill, not veto one spending bill in 6 years, sign into law major railroad reform law, a sop to unions, impose a tariff on steel imports, a sop to unions, pass a huge new entitlement program, i.e., Medicare prescription drug benefit; not close the Southern border; and on and on I could go. No credence should be given to Jack; he is wrong nearly 100% of the time, so why should anyone listen to what he says about Iraq?

Bush was confronted with a very difficult scenario. After the 9/11 attacks, which were building all through the 1990s, when you know who had has pants down around his ankles, that is why he fought so hard to have that documentary banned from ABC, Saddam had claimed the entire decade that he had the weapons, he was actively involved in terrorism, harboring, sponsoring, paying suicide bomber families $25,000 to foment unrest in Israel; Bill Clinton, Al Gore, John Edwards, Lurch Kerry, they all said the same thing that Bush did about WMDs. One can only conclude, they all lied, or they were all mistaken. I choose the latter, I will give even Clinton the benefit of the doubt. Either way, I expect them to err on the side of safety. The world is a much better place without Saddam. Remember, when we went after Saddam, Khadafy went to the UN and VOLUNTARILY gave up his WMD programs. That is how it works-speak softly and carry the biggest stick on the block. FDR did it to perfection; but, under his leadership hundreds of thousands of civilians were "murdered" (by the standards of the Left) in massive bombing raids over Japan and Germany. FDR imprisoned thousands of American citizens of Japanese descent in concentration camps in the west. Any you lefties cry about Bush-how stupid can you be? On second thought, don't tell me.

Two conservative neo-cons trying to rewrite history.

Every point you make is untrue and probally came from Fox,s fair and balanced. The other networks report the truth and Fox lies. That is fair and that is balance.

Congress did not vote to go to war. That is a bold-faced lie. Congress voted on a resulation for the President to protect the U.S. if under immediate threat of attack.

Bush/Cheney invaded Iraq using what is now called the Bush Doctrin. Look it up.

Congress has not declaired war on any Nation since December 1945.

The intelligence was gamed by Cheney when he directed the intel agencys what to report.

The weapons of mass destruction (chemical weapons) was given to Husain by Ronald Reagan to use against Iran.

The weapons inspectors were ordered out of Iraq by the U.S. just prior to the invasion, Iraq did not kick them out.

The Iraq people love us so much that they have killed over 4 thousand occuping U.S.soldiers. We love the Iraq people so much that we have killed over 100 thousand men, women and children. That is not counting the actual murders, torture and rapes that have been reported.

"Bush won fair and square." I can see you slept through the 2000 election. Florida was doing a recount on the returns when the U.S.Supreme Court order a halt to the recount. Judge Kennedy stated that if they did not intervine, Gore would win the election. When the Court said to resume the recount, the time limit for the recount had expired. If the recount had happened per Florida law, Gore would have won Florida and the U.S. would not be in a depression and fighting two wars and facing another.

"Saddam shot at our planes." It is a recorded fact the the U.S. destroyed command, control targets and defendsive targets before the invasion.

Again alzheimer patients, inspectors were in Iraq up to the point of the invasion.

The Liberal Democrats are again cleaning up a Conservative Republician mess.

When making a comment, please don,t use a opinion network like Fox (news?) for research.

The truth shall set ye free.

Whether G.W. Bush was a dry-drunk ex-coke fiend seeking revenge for his father, or just an inept buffoon is ancient history and largely irrelevant. The truth is, under Mr. Bush's "leadership", our country invaded, conquered, and occupied Iraq. The cost? Billions of dollars and thousands of lives.

Certainly one of the most shameful chapters in our country's history.

You are so wrong about President Bush. For one, the intelligence he received was that Sadaam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction and he did before he moved them out of the country. If you recall he used germ warfare on his own people. He was a tyrant to his people and the rest of the world. He taunted the U.S. every which way he could. He would not allow the weapon inspectors to inspect his weapons and thumbed his nose along with threats to the rest of the world. Bush was given the information about the weapons of mass destruction, went to Congress with it and they (Congress) voted to go to war. Bush did not do this by himself. Your Congress (both Democrats and Republicans) was just as responsible. Bush put the war in the hands of the Generals and let them do their job. The world is no longer putting up with Sadaam, the Iraqi people (contrary to what you have heard) are happy to have their freedom and rejoice in it each day despite the few hot headed terrorists trying to reverse it back (they will not be successful)and America is proud of our President Bush (even though you will not hear too much of this because of what media you listen to and where you get your info, probably from the liberal leftists, MSNBC, CNN, ABC, etc.) AS for the election in 2000, Bush won it fair and square. Just think if he had not won it and Gore was President. We would be in worst shape than we are now with Obama and that is pretty bad, huh? God bless this great nation. Dottie Fields

Actually the terrible bluder is we have a left wing press like this that only gives us half of the facts (or mainly false facts)! For your information, Saddam shot at our planes and did not allow inspections as per the treaty. It was common knowledge that Saddam was a threat to the Middle East and had used chemical weapons in the past. Had Saddam allowed inspectors, the war would not have happened and your left wing kooks would have had to use something else to cry about! Saddam would still be alive to murder Kurds and let his sons rape and torture virgins! By the way, how is Obama doing now for you? Like the way things are going...huh? The Associated Press is nothing more than the right arm of the Democrat Party! I don't understand why anyone would quote those bunch left wing kooks.

During the election for our 2000 President, the majority of voters voted for Albert Gore, a proven political exective leader that would lead our Nation in the correct direction.

The canidate with the less votes was a Conservative Moron who wanted to be the commander-in-chief and lead by being a war time President.

It came down to the U.S.Supreme Court picking the best qualified canidate.

The Court picked a fellow Conserative Moron, George Walker Bush.
