ELYRIA, Ohio — Carl E. Chapman Sr., 71, of Elyria, Ohio, passed away at EMH Medical Center Wednesday, March 13, 2013, following a lengthy illness.

Born May 19, 1949, in Chapmanville, he was a son of the late Albert G. and Goldie Lucas Chapman. Also preceding him in death were his brothers, Emil J. Dial and Charles Dial.

Carl served in the U.S. Army from 1959-1962 stationed in Fort Campbell, Ky., and served in Southeast Asia and West Germany. He retired in 1992 after 30 years of employment at the GM Parma Chevy Plant. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Elyria Ward since 1965, American Legion Post 12 and AMVETS of Elyria, USO sponsoring member, National Red Cross disaster volunteer serving in 65 national disasters including 9/11 at the Pentagon and in New York City, charter member of national WWII Museum in New Orleans, La., retired UAW Local 1005 in Parma, Ohio, and a NRA member. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and time spent watching his grandkids at sporting events.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Joyce A. Adkins Chapman; son, Carl E. Jr. (Wendy) Chapman of Idaho Falls, Idaho; daughters, Dawn M. Chapman (Tom) Farley of Elyria and Sheila L. Chapman (Paul) Bursley of Clarksfield, Ohio; special buddy, his dog JJ; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Ruby (Charles) Nelson of Ravenswood, Betty (Noah) Bentley of Wadsworth, Ohio, Molly (Leonard) Brown of Cottageville, Mary (Bill) Ramsey of Canal Winchester, Ohio, and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 20, at The Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Church, 12090 Durkee Road, Grafton, Ohio, with Bishop Ray Anderson officiating. Interment will follow at Butternut Ridge Cemetery, Eaton Township.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Memorial contributions can be forwarded to your local chapter of American Red Cross for disaster.
